A long narrow glacial lake, Lake Hawea is 35km
long, 7km wide and 410m deep. The deep blue, crystal
clear lake is a perfect compliment for the long
hot dry summer days, with the surrounding rugged
mountains plunging steeply to the waters edge
a great backdrop.
The small town of Lake Hawea is situated on the
southern shores of the lake, on the old glacial
morraine wall. Being elevated above the lake,
means the town has spectacular views and its aspect
means it has a wonderful sunny position. It is
quiet and relaxed, and provides a tranquil alternative
to nearby Wanaka and Queenstown.
BOATING AND FISHING. 1 min walk
Lake Hawea is a very popular fishing and boating
destination, with both brown and rainbow trout
as well as landlocked salmon. There is a boat
ramp 2min away at the holiday park. The Hawea
River is also popular with many fishermen, both
below the dam and at the many pools down river.
The river also provides good kayaking
SPORTS:
In the town are 2 tennis courts, a bowling green
and a cricket pitch. A 9 hole golf course is located
on the western side of town next to the Hawea
River. Wind-surfing is popular on the windier
days. Horse riding and hunting are also available.
WALKS:
Esplanade Reserve. 2 min walk
Running along the lakefront in front of the town
is a natural reserve with a formed track and several
picnic areas. An etching at the cental entrance
of the reserve provides a sketch of the lake view
with the names of the mountains.
Timaru Creek. 5 min drive
On the eastern shore of Lake Hawea, 10km from
the town Timaru creek offers excellent fishing
and an enjoyable walk to Junction Hut (2 hours)
for those who don't mind getting their feet wet.
Kidds Bush. 15 min drive
On the northern shore of Lake Hawea, 25km from
the town is a DOC campsite, picnic area, boat
ramp in a section of Beech forest. There is a
gentle half-hour nature trail through the bush,
as well as a steep climb to above the bush line
(2-3hours) for spectacular views across the lake
to the town and Criffel Range beyond.
